Every story begins with a spark of inspiration. For me, the idea for The Second Coming of Grace started with a single, powerful question: What if Yeshua of Nazaret—known today as Jesus—reincarnated in modern times as a woman? That question lingered in my mind and gradually developed into the story of Grace Morgenstern, a twenty-something actress discovering her clairsentient abilities and navigating her own spiritual awakening.
In this post, I’d like to take you behind the scenes of how that question became the foundation for my debut novel and share some of the challenges and choices I’ve faced along the way.
The Idea: Exploring a Feminine Incarnation
The whole point of the Incarnation in Christian mythology is that God lives a human life—experiencing all the struggles and triumphs that come with being human. However, “Jesus”, as we know him, misses out on one half of the human experience: the feminine perspective. I began to wonder, What would it look like if Jesus reincarnated today in the form of a woman? How would that change her experience, and what would she learn about humanity?
This question became the foundation for The Second Coming of Grace. Although my character Grace isn’t explicitly a reincarnation of Jesus, the themes of spiritual discovery, personal transformation, and inner strength are central to her journey. I wanted to explore what it means to live a modern life with a deeper, often overlooked connection to the divine, and how that connection impacts a woman’s experience.
Developing Grace Morgenstern
Grace’s journey parallels my own in many ways. Like her, I spent years trying to build an acting career in Toronto, navigating the challenges of the entertainment industry while balancing my own clairsentience and neurodivergence. These parts of myself—my sensitivity to the world of spirit and emotion and the way my mind processes the world of the here and now—helped shape Grace’s character.
Grace’s clairsentience allows her to feel the emotions of those around her, whether she wants to or not. It’s both a gift and a burden, something that sets her apart and ultimately pushes her to confront truths about herself and the world. Through her journey, I explore what it’s like to embrace such a gift while also grappling with the difficulties it brings.
Though Grace’s story is deeply personal for me, I’m not claiming to be Jesus Christ! Her story is her own, but it’s woven with threads of my own experiences and struggles with understanding and accepting myself.
Writing Challenges: Tobias and Cultural Sensitivity
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced while writing The Second Coming of Grace is ensuring the authenticity and respect of the characters I create. When I initially developed Tobias, Grace’s romantic lead, I envisioned him as a mixed-heritage Dakota character. However, after seeking advice, I realized that writing him this way might be seen as cultural appropriation.
Although it was disappointing to move away from that original idea, it ultimately led to a solution that resonated more with my personal experiences. Tobias is now of Irish descent, which better aligns with my own familiarity with Celtic traditions and folklore. This change not only allowed me to write more confidently from a place of understanding, but it also deepened Tobias’s character in ways I hadn’t expected. Sometimes, these kinds of challenges push us to find solutions that feel more authentic and aligned with our personal experiences.
What’s Next?
As I continue to write The Second Coming of Grace, I’m excited to explore how Grace’s journey unfolds and how she navigates the challenges of her gift. Writing this novel has already been a deeply personal and transformative experience for me, and I’m eager to share more about the process as it evolves.
