– A new Canadian period drama based on the novel by L. M. Montgomery
“We’re not the people we were. But we’re still here.”
Set on Canada’s home front during the First World War, Rilla of Ingleside is a moving and faithful new stage adaptation of L. M. Montgomery’s final novel in the Anne of Green Gables series.
Dramatized with warmth, emotional depth, and moments of humour, this full-length play follows 15-year-old Rilla Blythe as she navigates the upheaval of war, unexpected motherhood, and her own coming of age. As her brothers enlist and friends fall in love—or fall in battle—Rilla grows into a quiet strength that neither she nor her family expected.
Excerpt from Rilla
“When I find heather on the front lines, I’ll send you some. Promise.”
“If it’s growing there, you’d better not step on it.”
“I’ll guard it with my life.”

Why Rilla, and Why Now?
First published in 1921, Rilla of Ingleside remains one of Montgomery’s most powerful and underappreciated works. It’s the only one of the Anne books set entirely during wartime—and one of the few Canadian novels to depict World War I exclusively through the eyes of those who remained at home.
This adaptation retains Montgomery’s distinctive voice while reshaping the novel for modern audiences: a strong central role for a young woman, richly drawn ensemble characters, and a powerful story of love, loss, and resilience.
For today’s audiences—especially in a time of global uncertainty—Rilla’s story resonates deeply. It’s a reminder that courage often begins at the kitchen table.
